We still have 33 vacant plots, so could you please help us spread the word round.
Also, if you are an existing member and would like some extra space for potatoes and squashes, you can take one of the extra plots, free of charge until the end of September 2014; all we ask is that you donate some produce for our Open Day. If you are interested, please contact Mahesh(

Work days

We are reintroducing our monthly work day on the first Sunday of each month which will be just before the food-sharing. We would like everyone to come and give a hand even for half-an hour, anytime between 10 am and 12:30 pm. This will help you make up your contribution to the scheme and is good fun.

Apart from general maintenance tasks, we have planned a specific task for Sunday 6th April: to install an irrigation system for growers who have plots in either side of the Red-shed (plots 125, 125A and 146, 146A).

Once the system is installed, it will increase the supply of water in the area and we won’t need to compete with our neighbours for access to water.
Our friend Willy will be there to help us install the system and explain how it works. But before that, we need to dig the trench and bury the pipe. Every little bit of help counts, so please come if you can. It is important that you learn how to maintain the system in future.

Thank You

A big ‘ thank you’ to everyone who helped with the tool and shed clear up. It was really great to have so much help and enthusiasm. I am pleased to say that we found lots of tools which are now sharpened, cleaned and ready for this season’s use. The sheds have been cleaned and a lot of rubbish has been removed. The white shed is now for storage of large items such as lawnmowers, and the white tools have become part of the blue shed inventory.
Also, we have an impressive collection of Wellingtons. cute-pig-in-red-wellingtonsIf you think they might include yours or would like to claim a pair, please see the duty person on Sunday or Wednesday.

Jane Graham, team leader, maintenance.

This Saturday

GO2 member Peter Anderson is co-leading a workshop on Hugelkulture raised beds from 10am to 3pm at the Grow Our Own allotments, near the polytunnel. Everyone is welcome to learn-by-doing. Please bring food to share.

On your plot this month:

It’s time to get ready for the busy months ahead! There’s still time to
chit your potatoes, but don’t be tempted to plant them out yet. March
can be very cold.

Broccoli – purple sprouting, brussels sprouts, winter cauliflower,
cabbage – spring greens, kale, leeks, parsnips, perpetual spinach, Swiss
Chard. And winter herbs: rosemary, sage and thyme.

Sow these now: beetroot, broad beans, carrots, parsnips, peas,
radishes and turnips. You can also sow lettuce and spinach under cover.

Wait until mid-March (or later if cold) to plant your early
potatoes (Charlotte). You can plant garlic, onion sets and shallots now.

Next month:

April will be a busy time on the allotment. We’ll be starting
to sow the tender plants under protection for you – courgettes, beans
etc – and there will be plenty of vegetable and flower seeds for you too.

This Sunday March 9th – two events:

1. How To Make The Most Of Your Plot with Mahesh who will take you through the process of digging, planning and composting. Meet at 11am at the big shed, finish at noon.

2. The Big Spring Tool and Shed Maintenance Event. Come and help with repairing, sharpening and colour coding all the tools, and cleaning and tidying the sheds. All members are welcome to help with the tasks, to meet the maintenance team and to enjoy free coffee, tea and cake. Meet Jane Graham, Maintenance team leader, at the big shed at 10.00. Finish at 12.30.
This is a great opportunity to help you fulfil your commitment to give three days a year to the running of our community. Even if you have signed up for a different team, you can take part in any of these group events which are fun anyway. We look forward to seeing you soon.
