You may have noticed that our neighbours, Anthony and Sid, are keeping hens on their allotment. Sadly, two of the chickens have died, it’s thought from eating rhubarb leaves. Hens will eat anything and some plants will harm them, so PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE HENS and ensure that any children under your supervision do not feed them either.
Just in case you don’t know, rhubarb leaves are poisonous. The leaves contain poisonous oxalates that are absorbed into the bloodstream and cause damage. Don’t eat or compost them, but you can put them in a bucket of water to create a pesticide which is great for getting rid of white fly. Pick your vegetables first, then douse them in the bucket. Take them home and wash well before eating.
