On Saturday it is our Open Day

go2needsyou

We will be serving food to the public.

To help people with food allergies it is best to label food with the ingredients used.

So we don’t lose anything, we should put our names on containers and other equipment which we bring to the event.

Look more professional – wear an apron when serving food.

It would help if you could bring a flask of hot water – we’ll need it for making drinks and washing mugs.

New Recipes

Bridget has provided two more chutney recipes for the preserves recipes page, which has been updated.

Bridget says,

“The tomatillo one seems, on first tasting, to be rather good.  Hope to have another workshop, making pumpkin chutney + something else, later in October.”

GO2 Tenth Anniversary and Open Day

GO2-Bluebell-Open-Day-2014-small
This is a fantastic occasion and not one to be missed – GO2 is 10 years old and going strong. We are celebrating this amazing project started by the indefatigable Mahesh so it would be great to see as many growers – past, present and future – as possible! We have advertised the open day widely but please tell your friends and neighbours they would be most welcome.

The Food team is arranging refreshments and we can be sure that there will be lots of lovely things to eat (contributions welcome no doubt). They are also setting up a produce stall so if you were given a temporary plot until October, now is the time to let us have some of the produce to sell, as was the deal, or provide something else to sell!

So far, the programme for the day is:

10 am – 12 pm: setting up
12 – 4 pm: open to visitors, renewals for 2014/2015 (so bring your money if you haven’t already paid)
1.30: arrival of the Lord Mayor (who may come on a bicycle and may be in full chains or not!)
4 pm: on with the Kelly Kettle for a restorative cuppa while clearing up!

If anyone could help set up, clear up, show visitors round, etc please let me know pronto – or turn up on the day!

On your plot this month: September

image001
This is the month for bumper harvests and getting ready for winter crops.

Harvest:

In season now: beans; brassicas – broccoli, Chinese and summer cabbage, cauliflower, kohl-rabi; roots – beetroot, carrots, Florence fennel, radish, turnip; squash family: courgettes, marrows, pumpkins, squashes; green leaves – spinach, salad leaves; chilli peppers; sweet corn; tomatoes; herbs; maincrop potatoes.
There’s also fruit on the community trees: late season plums, maincrop apples and pears.

Seeds:

This month we have green manure seeds – phacella, Hungarian rye and winter tares. Sow them now and dig the plants in next spring, to give your plot a good over-winter feed.

Plants:

This month we have kale plants and winter salads.

Next month:

In October we’ll have onion sets; and in November we’ll have broad beans for late autumn sowing.

Compost Day is this Sundaycompost-bins

Anyone who is available for an hour or two from 10am on Sunday 7th September, please come along to help sort out the various composting areas on the site.
See Phil when you arrive – he might bring biscuits.

Thanks!

Open Day is only 3 weeks away, so please have a look in your book shelves and cupboards for any cookery books and items you no longer need. We’re hoping to have a fundraising sale on the big day – Sat 27th September, 12 – 4. The Lord Mayor is coming at 1.30 to cut the birthday cake. We hope to see lots of growers and would appreciate offers of help in showing people round. Could anyone organise a stall to sell produce?

Thanks. Christine, adminatsigngrow-our-own.co.uk

Monster tomatoes.

We’ve been tidying up the tomato plants in the polytunnel. This pic is of a single monster-sized plant. Hoping for a bumper display for Open Day, so we’ll have to resist the temptation to pick the tomatoes before they’re properly ripe! Fingers crossed that the blight holds off…
