Runner Bean

Runner beans are very easy to grow, and extremely productive. Pick throughout the season; they will continue to produce. The young pods can be eaten before seeds develop.

Site

Most varieties of runner bean grow to 3m (10ft), so require a wigwam or sturdy frame. They prefer a sunny site.

Plant care

Water well once flowers appear.

Varieties

Enorma Elite    A reselected stock of this widely grown variety. Superior quality slim stringless pods are produced over a long period.

White Emergo    A high yielding, white flowered variety with smooth pods when young and a very pleasant taste.

Similar to

Climbing French bean, dwarf French bean, broad bean, mangetout, sugar snap pea

Birds like to peck at the red flowers. Slugs and snails will eat the leaves. Planting too densely makes pods difficult to harvest.
